How Do We Love God Practically - Part 2

by Nancy Missler

In Part One we began a series on what it means to love God in our every day lives. In other words, what are the day-to-day steps in laying down our wills and our lives to God and loving Him as He desires.

We shared that there are eight steps to what I call my "Survival Kit." These are steps that God has laid out for us in Scripture to help us deal with our sin and become those open and cleansed vessels--loving Him.

The first four steps we covered in Part One. These are attitudes that we need to form daily. They are not steps we have to do each time we quench God's Spirit, but simply a mind-set we should have on each day.

Inner Court Ritual

The final four steps of the Survival Kit, however, are mandatory steps, ones we must do each time we sin and quench God's Spirit. These four steps are known as the "Inner Court Ritual," because they are the actual steps that the priests took in the Inner Court of the Temple in order to deal with their sin. First, the priests went to the ten Bronze Lavers to wash their hands and feet before worshipping, then they went to the holocaust Altar where they offered their sacrifices, and, lastly, they bathed totally in the Moulton Sea.

CALIFORNIA TO ALLOW SAME-SEX MARRIAGES
Print K-House eNews for May 27, 2008

In 2004 the issue of gay marriage became the focus of national attention when, in an act of civil disobedience, the mayor of San Francisco ordered clerks to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples. The incident in San Francisco prompted city officials in several counties and states to follow suit. These events triggered numerous lawsuits challenging marriage laws around the country.

Once such lawsuit worked its way through the appeals process to the California Supreme Court. Earlier this month the court decided that limiting the definition of marriage to a union "between a man and a woman" is discriminatory and unconstitutional. The California law that prohibits same-sex marriages, which was passed by voters in 2000, has therefore been struck down. The case will no doubt set a precedent that could have an impact on other states.

The state of California could start issuing marriage licenses to homosexual couples within the next month. However conservatives have asked the court to hold off on issuing marriage licenses until after November's election. This fall California voters will most likely be given the chance to vote on a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriages. Those in favor of the ban hope that if the amendment is adopted the issue of same-sex marriages will finally be put to rest. If the amendment doesn't make it on the ballot, or if it is rejected by voters, California will become the second state in the union to recognize gay marriages.

THE BOOK OF JUDE
Print K-House eNews for May 27, 2008

This smallest book of the New Testament is also, in many ways, the most provocative.

The Epistle of Jude is a tiny book, tragically neglected by students, yet overflowing with fascinating Old Testament references and allusions: lessons from Israel in the Wilderness, the angels that sinned, the strange events in Sodom and Gomorrah, Michael and Satan's contention over the body of Moses, and other insights from Cain, Balaam, Korah, as well as the mysterious person known as Enoch.

It is surprising to learn of allusions to events in the Old Testament that are only found in the New Testament: the Second Coming prophecy of Enoch, that Noah was a preacher of righteousness, the names of the two magicians in Egypt, that Elijah prayed to stop rain for 3 1/2 years, and that the Pharaoh of the Exodus was not Egyptian.

Why study the book of Jude? Because it is written for us today. It is written for the end times, for the end of the Church Age. The beginning of the Church Age was, of course, the Acts of the Apostles. However, the end of the Church Age might be called the Acts of the Apostates. Jude is the only book devoted entirely to the great apostasy. "Shall the Son of Man find faith on the Earth?"

Calif. Gay Marriage Ruling to Unleash Litigation
By Pete Winn

(CNSNews.com) - The California Supreme Court's 4-3 decision last Thursday to create homosexual marriage was "a blockbuster" that sent a shockwave that will eventually reverberate in every state of the union, according to legal experts.

"One of the principal effects of the California decision w Calif. Gay Marriage Ruling to Unleash Litigation - CNSnews May 15, 2008 - Berean News will be to create large numbers of same-sex marriages that will not only reside in California, but will migrate across the country," said Douglas Kmiec, a law professor at Pepperdine University Law School in Malibu, Calif.

Kmiec, one of the nation's foremost legal scholars, told Cybercast News Service that the California court "tossed out the window" the view of marriage that predates the founding of the United States, predates the U.S. Constitution, and that was assumed by those who drafted California's constitution, as well as those who created civil rights law itself.

"(The justices) decided that marriage as a fundamental right could not be limited to heterosexual couples," Kmiec said. "But they also decided, for the first time anywhere in the United States, that as a matter of state constitutional law, sexual orientation was what lawyers call 'a suspect classification' deserving of protection."

Is There a Large Gap of Time between Genesis 1:1 and 1:2?

The idea that a vast period of time elapsed between the first two verses of Genesis is known as the gap theory. Most variations of this theory interpret Genesis 1:1 as the first creation, which included the creation of the heavens, the earth, plants and animals, and even a race of humans preceding Adam! Perhaps billions of years then elapsed, during which time Satan and his angels fell and corrupted earth's inhabitants. God then judged and destroyed the earth and all its inhabitants. Thus, the earth became "formless and void" (Genesis 1:2) and remained that way for eons. Genesis 1:3, according to the gap theory, describes the beginning of the second creation with the first day of the (re)creation week--the familiar six-day creation. This series of events is also called the "ruin-reconstruction theory" or "the pre-Adamic cataclysm theory."

The modern gap theory was proposed in 1814 by Thomas Chalmers, a leading Scottish theologian. Some geologists of his day argued that the earth was much older than Genesis implied. Chalmers, therefore, proposed the gap theory to harmonize Genesis with those demands. No clear record shows anyone prior to 1814 interpreting Genesis 1:1-2 in this way. This is especially significant, because Hebrew scholars 2,000 years ago certainly understood Hebrew writing better than we do today. The gap theory simply accommodated the growing demand for long periods of time.
