In Part One we began a series on what it means to love God in our every day lives. In other words, what are the day-to-day steps in laying down our wills and our lives to God and loving Him as He desires.
We shared that there are eight steps to what I call my "Survival Kit." These are steps that God has laid out for us in Scripture to help us deal with our sin and become those open and cleansed vessels--loving Him.
The first four steps we covered in Part One. These are attitudes that we need to form daily. They are not steps we have to do each time we quench God's Spirit, but simply a mind-set we should have on each day.
Inner Court Ritual
The final four steps of the Survival Kit, however, are mandatory steps, ones we must do each time we sin and quench God's Spirit. These four steps are known as the "Inner Court Ritual," because they are the actual steps that the priests took in the Inner Court of the Temple in order to deal with their sin. First, the priests went to the ten Bronze Lavers to wash their hands and feet before worshipping, then they went to the holocaust Altar where they offered their sacrifices, and, lastly, they bathed totally in the Moulton Sea.
CALIFORNIA TO ALLOW SAME-SEX MARRIAGES
In 2004 the issue of gay marriage became the focus of national attention when, in an act of civil disobedience, the mayor of San Francisco ordered clerks to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples. The incident in San Francisco prompted city officials in several counties and states to follow suit. These events triggered numerous lawsuits challenging marriage laws around the country.
Once such lawsuit worked its way through the appeals process to the California Supreme Court. Earlier this month the court decided that limiting the definition of marriage to a union "between a man and a woman" is discriminatory and unconstitutional. The California law that prohibits same-sex marriages, which was passed by voters in 2000, has therefore been struck down. The case will no doubt set a precedent that could have an impact on other states.
The state of California could start issuing marriage licenses to homosexual couples within the next month. However conservatives have asked the court to hold off on issuing marriage licenses until after November's election. This fall California voters will most likely be given the chance to vote on a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriages. Those in favor of the ban hope that if the amendment is adopted the issue of same-sex marriages will finally be put to rest. If the amendment doesn't make it on the ballot, or if it is rejected by voters, California will become the second state in the union to recognize gay marriages.
This smallest book of the New Testament is also, in many ways, the most provocative.
The Epistle of Jude is a tiny book, tragically neglected by students, yet overflowing with fascinating Old Testament references and allusions: lessons from Israel in the Wilderness, the angels that sinned, the strange events in Sodom and Gomorrah, Michael and Satan's contention over the body of Moses, and other insights from Cain, Balaam, Korah, as well as the mysterious person known as Enoch.
It is surprising to learn of allusions to events in the Old Testament that are only found in the New Testament: the Second Coming prophecy of Enoch, that Noah was a preacher of righteousness, the names of the two magicians in Egypt, that Elijah prayed to stop rain for 3 1/2 years, and that the Pharaoh of the Exodus was not Egyptian.
Why study the book of Jude? Because it is written for us today. It is written for the end times, for the end of the Church Age. The beginning of the Church Age was, of course, the Acts of the Apostles. However, the end of the Church Age might be called the Acts of the Apostates. Jude is the only book devoted entirely to the great apostasy. "Shall the Son of Man find faith on the Earth?"
